“Today we don't teach you to do extraordinary things… …. We teach you to do ordinary things extraordinarily well…” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The course programme is intended to offer instruction in a number of easy, practical techniques that improve day-to-day communication skills. They are intended to enhance understanding of counselling theory, develop listening skills, and offer ideas for interventions.
Attendees will practice techniques, as well as listening to theory.
This course can used to complement your existing work with clients, or as the start of re-training - at a time when the government is making available the funds to train 3,500 new psychotherapists...
ANCHORING – In NLP terms an Anchor is a “stimulus which triggers a specific physiological or emotional state or behaviour.” In practical terms we will provide you with the knowledge and ability to turn on a positive happy state of mind whenever you want. Everyone will get a positive anchor! We all know how particular pieces of music or a smell invoke a memory, either good or bad, and we recreate the feeling of that memory. Our Anchoring techniques will give you the tools to enable you to tune into good feelings, and your client to leave in a positive frame of mind. GRIEF GRID - This model was developed to describe and resolve the process of loss, and can be used in Bereavement Counselling – but also can be used in any type of loss: divorce, moving house, changing jobs etc. Learn how not to get stuck with bad feelings after bad things have happened; and learn how to recognise when other people are suffering because they are stuck – and how to unstick them!
DISCOUNT MATRIX - Studies have shown that in everyday communications people ‘discount' as much as 75% of the information given to them – they minimise their own importance, the importance of the person they are with, or of what they are saying, or the way that they are saying it. Learn to spot discounts, assess their relevance, and design an appropriate intervention… (The example used illustrates how to use the technique when dealing with a smoker!)
Have you noticed than in everyday situations we don't always communicate as successfully with people as we would like? Maybe there's someone who supposedly likes or loves us – a partner or our children – but although we ask them for the same thing again and again, we don't get what we want…? Or maybe there's someone who keeps complaining that we don't give them what they keep asking for – even though we try our best to please them …?
The problem is that there are several different ways to describe the world – each as valid as the other – but each person has a preferred version. And the other person may not be using the same as us!
V.A.K. - Your kids already know about VAK – it's about the fact that we all have different preferred FRAMES OF REFERENCE (eg. Visual, Auditory or Kinaesthetic ) . Teachers are routinely trained to use this technique, and all of us can benefit by learning how to hear better, and how to be heard…
ACTIVE LISTENING is a structured way of listening and responding to others. Learn to focus your attention on your client. Suspend your own frame of reference and suspend judgment, fully attending to the client. Learn REFLECTION and CLARIFICATION to develop and demonstrate your understanding of their situation… Learn to achieve RAPPORT, t hen BREAK STATE – and CHUNKING UP too… REFRAMING – learn when to say something helpful, and when to avoid clichés!
STROKES - be nice to people – and yourself! What's your STROKE ECONOMY?
All courses are certificated.
