TESCOLAND: an exposé of some of the daftness inherent in our system where the retail sector is dominated by supermarket chains and over-regulated by laws that insisted on straight cucumbers...

Thinking about cooking a Thai Green Curry but worrying about your figure? Tesco have thoughtfully provided a low fat version of Coconut Milk. And it's the same price! How kind of them...
Wait a minute. Look at the ingredients.
One says Coconut Milk 55%, water....
The other says Coconut Milk 39%, water....
Yes, they have achieved low fat coconut milk by throwing away a third of the coconut milk and replacing it with water! So that's low fat, low calorie, low coconut, Coconut Milk then?
The price doesn't look quite as generous when you realise that they are making 40% more tins to sell from the same amount of coconut milk simply by padding it out with tap water...
Thanks Tesco. Err... We could do that ourselves using our own tap water, couldn't we?

Oh dear, and another in the same vein...
You can have your tins of Sweetcorn with or without salt and sugar. How kind. But wait:
Ingredients: Sweetcorn, water, salt, sugar. That's 165g for 19p
Ingredients: Sweetcorn, water. That's 160g for 25p.
So if you want to live longer you get less for more!
Thanks Tesco. Yes, you obviously have our health as your priority...

Supermarkets rightly get criticised for excess packaging, but try hard to justify some of their choices. Often it is us consumers that cause the dilemma...
Recently supermarkets have introduced washed and individually shrink-wrapped potatoes! Faced with criticism, they point out that many consumers just love the convenience of a product that goes from shelf to microwave with no preparation at all...
Aaarghh... Wonko was right - that ranks with instructions on toothpicks...

Please, let us know what you have spotted.
It isn't just Tesco, all the supermarkets are as bad as each other...
And we, the customers, often don't help...
And the smaller retailers often don't help themselves either with their pathetic service and typical off-hand British rudeness.... Contribute
